Avery had always known that she wanted to be cop. That was something that her and her family didn’t see eye to eye on. Avery’s parents had hoped that she would take over the family business one day. After high school she packed her bags and went to school in California, she was hoping that some distance would do everyone some good. Four years later and graduating at the top of her class Avery wasn’t ready to go home yet. The summer after graduation she found herself following her dream with an internship at Scotland Yard. For Avery it was the best moment of her life, for her parents it was the nail in the coffin that she probably wouldn’t be coming home anytime soon.
The day after graduation she packed the few items that she wanted to take with her, and gave her roommate a big hug while she squealed about how excited she was. Her roommate rolled her eyes at Avery’s over the top enthusiasm that she always seem to have. As Avery got in to the cab she flashed one last smile and yelled back “I saw that eye roll, and you know you’re going to miss me” and with that she was off to the rest of her life. As she stepped off the plane she took a deep breath and took it all in, she wanted to remember what that moment felt like forever. Nothing would be the same after that day.
Avery had been at Scotland Yard for just over 18 months when she decided to go back to Chicago. She packed her bags and grabbed the next plane home. As she walked out the doors at O’Hare there they were. She had talked to her dad to let him know she was coming home, so it shouldn’t have been a complete surprise that he was there. It was more that her mother was there as well and she wasn’t in the mood for the lecture and the “I told you so.” After the brief hug and hello they got in the car and started heading toward home. They sat in silence for what felt like days, it wasn’t until they were pulling in the driveway that her dad asked if she was okay. Those words “are you okay?” She shook her head and pushed a smile through as she reassured her dad that everything was fine. Everything wasn’t fine, the truth was she didn’t know what she was, but she knew one thing and that was she wasn’t fine.
